Men noen blir mer fascinerende enn andre.

SVAR: Du trenger stor stahet.

briefly in English;
First author to answer my five questions is my favourite Norwegian author, Jon Ewo . He was the first that came to mind, and luckily he said yes 🙂

Jon Ewo first crept into my bookloving heart with his book «The sun is a phat god», which I recommend to anyone, but especially young adults.
He was born in 1957,in Oslo,Norway, and has a librarian education, but he now writes full time.

Here’s my five for five questions; loosely translated, both Q’s and A’s.

Q1) So,how did you become a writer anyway? Did you have other dreams when you were a kid, other than being a writer?

A: When I was a kid, I was going to become an archeologist. Becoming a writer was a bit unreal to me. I knew,of course, that all the books I read had been written by some people – but it was always by these kind of big,fat men with mustaches and serious faces who lived special and wondrous lives. People who had nothing to do with me or my life. So even if I scribbled a bit, I didn’t think in the direction of writing books myself. It was more writing for myself,or a few buddies who also wrote a bit. But then,my senior year at school I worked a lot on a school paper. I discovered then that I enjoyed writing, and that I actually wrote poems and short stories. From there it kinda snowballed. But first, after writing ten years, my first book got published.

Q2) What’s important to you when you get an idea? Do you write down every idea,or do you choose some and discard others?
A; All ideas can,of course, be good. But some become more fascinating than others. Some are practically finished concepts when they pop into my head, but most of them needs to mature,to grow and develop, and to be filled with new ideas. But I write down most of these thoughts..and use almost none of them.

Q3) Do you need a special serenity,or be in a special mood when you’re going to write?

A; I have my own office in downtown Oslo where I go five days a week and write my daily quota. The only thing I need,is hat I can’t play music. But if anyone talks in the room next to mine,or I hear the traffic outside doesn’t matter. Five days a week, week in and week out,’till the book is finished.

Q4.) What was the most important book for you as a kid,and what is the most important book to you now?

A; When I was a kid, I kinda just read a lot,and didn’t really have any favourite books, because I didn’t read the same books over again. The world was full of books, and I was happily digging in. Now I have a few I pick up every now and again. A couple of Jack Kerouac’s novels,Graham Greene. Some of Raymond Carvers short stories, and some poetry by Arthur Rimbaud and Allan Ginsberg.

Q5) A writers nightmare must be writers block..have you had it,and what do you do about it?

A; I’ve had it,and it was terrible. I wrote garbage for a couple of years ’till an editor in Damm asked if I could write an EasyRead-book for young adults for them. Up until then,I’d only written books for adults, and couldn’t really see myself doing anything else. But doing something else became the road away from writers block. Don’t know if it will work for anyone else. But it’s no use just sitting there, hoping something will come. So maybe doing the unexpected works?

..and finally,if you have any advice for young unpublished authors, please share 🙂

A; You need to be stubborn, and believe in yourself, and to have the will not to give up when you get rejected. The will to sit down every day and write – or at least try to write. Even if it’s just two sentences. If you don’t have the will, the stubbornness etc, then find another job. The job of being a writer is merciless, lots of people start..but eventually quit.

Thank you Jon,for helping me in my blog, and my quest of becoming a published writer! 🙂

Here is an excerpt from «The sun is a phat god», cut/pasted from his own website. Enjoy!

«It’s a burning hot summer and Adam is on a burning mission. In search of some peace of mind, after having been jilted by his girlfriend, he climbs to the top of an abandoned storage silo in the centre of Oslo. He seeks consolation in falling asleep in the sun but is soon amazed to discover the sun has other plans and a lot more to offer him than a mere suntan. The sun is a fat god out to help Adam realise his mission – to grow up.

In trying to focus on growing up, Adam realises life is inside-out and back-to-front. The big issues might be small and the small ones enormous. Adam’s father confides in him that he might be dying at the same time as Adam is caught up in philosophising with Ibsen, wooing a new woman, learning how to roller-blade and striving to cook the perfect steak. Then to zoom in even further, Adam also likes to indulge in trivia, such as, how much honey does a bee produce in its lifetime. What – trivia, did you say? Not for the bee, it isn’t.»
